What is SkinPen?

SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market. It’s also made in the USA and undergoes rigorous safety testing to ensure your skin gets the reset that it needs. This in-office treatment has little-to-no downtime, is minimally invasive, and produces natural results that improve with time. The greatest advantage? The treatment is safe and effective for every skin tone and type!

How does it work?

Microneedling reaches the skin below the surface. The SkinPen uses tiny needles to create microscopic punctures in the skin’s outer layers. Your aesthetician will select the precise speed and depth settings for your personal goals. These tiny punctures stimulate the body’s production of collagen and elastin during the wound healing process. The wound healing process has three phases:

    1. Inflammation – Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to cleanse the wound, remove debris, increase blood flow, and begin to create new tissue. This phase creates redness that lasts 1-2 days.
    2. Proliferation – The wound begins to rebuild with new immature cells and a new network of blood vessels.
    3. Remodeling – New cells mature as dermal tissues with a new network of blood vessels. These strong dermal tissues replace the wound. This phases lasts about 6 weeks, after which point you can be retreated.

SkinPen precision microneedling is effective in smoothing unsightly scars without harming skin structure. The device’s design enables aestheticians to access small areas with ease, such as around the nose (anyone else have that annoying nose ring scar from 2007?). Using microneedling can reveal smooth, healthy skin that glows from within!

What Can I Expect During My Treatment?

Before your procedure, make sure you do not use any retinol products 72 hours prior and make sure you inform your provider about any medications you may be taking (blood thinners, fish oil, Accutane, etc.).

When you come in for your treatment, our Licensed Medical Aesthetician will begin the procedure by applying a topical numbing cream that will make the treatment comfortable. After the numbing cream sits on your skin for a few moments, they will begin with a light cleanse and application of ZO Accelerator Serum that will infuse into your skin during the microneedling treatment.

During the treatment, the SkinPen will glide over your skin with ease. It is not particularly painful! There are some areas that can be more sensitive than others, but almost all patients report that the treatment is quite easy and tolerable.

What is the downtime?

Immediately after the treatment you will have a pink glow that resembles a light sunburn. Your skin may feel a little tighter or warmer than usual. Expect slight redness over the next 24-48 hours as your skin begins to repair and renew. After 48 hours, there should be no lasting side effects and you can begin your normal skincare regimen. Of course, after any skin treatment…don’t forget your sunscreen!

How many treatments do I need? How long will my results last?

Oftentimes patients see positive results after one treatment, which can be a great introduction to microneedling. To get the full effect of the treatment our aestheticians will likely recommend a series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. This is because skin takes about 4 weeks to synthesize new collagen and resurface.

Microneedling Benefits, Prep, and Downtime: FAQs

What is microneedling (SkinPen) and what does it improve?

Microneedling with SkinPen is an FDA-cleared treatment that creates tiny micro-channels in the skin to trigger your body’s natural healing response and boost collagen and elastin, helping smooth fine lines, improve texture, and reduce the look of acne scars, blemishes, and hyperpigmentation.

What are the main benefits of microneedling at Capizzi MD?

Benefits listed include smaller-looking pores, smoother fine lines and wrinkles, firmer/tighter skin, improved appearance of acne scars and other scars, and support for redness and pigmentation concerns.

What should I do before my microneedling appointment?

The page advises avoiding retinol products for 72 hours before treatment and informing your provider about medications/supplements such as blood thinners, fish oil, Accutane, etc.

.What happens during the treatment? Does it hurt?

A Licensed Medical Aesthetician applies topical numbing cream, then cleanses the skin and applies a peptide-rich serum to infuse during treatment. The SkinPen glides across the skin and most patients find it tolerable, with some areas more sensitive than others.

What is the downtime and how many sessions are recommended?

Expect a pink “light sunburn” glow and mild tight/warm feeling right after treatment, with redness for about 24–48 hours. Many patients see results after one session, but a common recommendation is a series of 3 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
