The Liposuction Procedure
As we age, it is common for people to experience fatty deposits that seem to just “show up” in the belly, thighs, hips, and legs. This is the result of a naturally slowing metabolism, and over time these fatty deposits become harder and harder to contour via traditional methods such as diet and exercise.
While there are non-surgical body contouring options, liposuction is one of the most effective techniques for body contouring. Liposuction is performed by suctioning excess fat tissue through a thin metal tube known as a cannula. Incisions are minimal and heal to be virtually invisible.
Always on the forefront of medical advances in the industry, Capizzi MD offers our patients the very latest liposuction techniques available, including Power-Assisted Liposuction from Microaire and Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction from Vaser. Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate options for you during your consultation. Besides offering options for patients to enhance and improve their outcomes, our surgeons employ several state-of-the-art techniques that reduce bruising and tenderness for our patients.
What is Power-Assisted Liposuction?
As the name suggests, this method involves using a cannula that is power-assisted. This means that the cannula itself vibrates to break up fatty tissue to allow for smoother contours. With this method, your surgeon has more control during the fat removal process and is able to reach difficult areas with better results. It also decreases post-treatment discomfort and downtime.
What is Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction?
In our practice, we use Vaser Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction to further enhance liposuction results. This technique uses ultrasound energy to target fat cells specifically and stimulates more skin tightening than Power-Assisted. This means that cellulite and sagging skin concerns are also addressed during this procedure. This unique approach helps your surgeon achieve better results and contour for his patients, leading to enhanced BBL results, and even allowing him to finely sculpt a six-pack if desired.
Oftentimes, the two liposuction techniques (Power and Ultrasonic) are used in conjunction with each other to allow for smoother curves, tighter skin, and significant fat removal for our patients. During your consultation Your surgeon will assess your needs and recommend a treatment plan built specifically for your goals.
Enhanced Comfort in our Accredited Surgery Center
Relax and know that you are in the best of hands at Capizzi MD. An AAAASF-accredited surgery center is located in our East Boulevard office and all procedures are considered outpatient, meaning you will return home the same day. Liposuction procedures last 1-2 hours, unless combined with other procedures. A time estimate will be given when you schedule your surgery.
In our office, liposuction is always performed under general anesthesia for your safety and comfort. Although there are techniques that allow for local anesthesia liposuction procedures, we find that results are better and recovery is easier for our patients that undergo general anesthesia.
Liposuction Recovery
Typically patients spend about thirty minutes recovering in our surgery suite before they get ready to return home.
The First Three Days
You will wake up in a first-stage compression garment around your treatment areas. It is important to wear these diligently, as they reduce swelling and help contour your body to its new shape. You may begin showering the day after your procedure.
Expect mild pain and soreness, which is manageable through pain medication, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen. It is common to experience swelling in the areas you had sculpted.
It is helpful to have help around the house the first few days as you resume your daily routine. Walk around and complete light chores as feels comfortable, as this will help reduce swelling and speed the recovery process. After 2-3 days we see most patients return to work.
Weeks 1-2
You will no longer be in pain at this point. You will be able to return to work, limiting straining or heavy lifting. Light exercise such as walking or yoga can be resumed.
Weeks 3-5
Swelling can still be subsiding at this point, this is normal and can take months to completely subside. At this point, you will begin to see visible results from your liposuction procedure. Your results will continue to improve as the swelling and bruising continue to heal. You likely will need to purchase a second compression garment as the first one begins to get looser around the treatment areas. You can resume swimming if desired as your incisions close.
Week 6 and Beyond
Your tissue, skin and fat, will contract down and continue to do so over the next six weeks. Keeping one’s weight stable is very important during this time. If you need help keeping your weight stable, you can schedule a Weight Loss consultation with one of our Registered Nurses to discuss if HCG or other supplements are right for your treatment plan. This extra boost can help make a great result even better.
Remember that the wonderful outcome you see in the mirror after surgery will only improve over time. While liposuction is a great procedure to do alone, it’s also a great addition to a tummy tuck, breast lift, or breast augmentation.
