As its name suggests, CoolSculpting is a clinically tested, FDA-approved procedure that involves freezing the body’s most stubborn fat cells in the belly, buttocks, arms, thighs or back until they disintegrate. It is especially effective for male and female clients who are within a reasonable weight for their frames, but who suffer from unwanted and unsightly body bulging that remains resistant to diet and exercise alone. Additionally, CoolSculpting may be employed during breast reconstruction to dispose of excess pectoral fat, or during FTM top surgery for the purpose of accomplishing a more masculine body aesthetic.
In all cases, CoolSculpting requires no incisions, no extended recovery times and almost no postoperative discomfort. It can therefore be a successful and non-invasive alternative to liposuction under the right circumstances. Patients can usually return to work or school the same day as the procedure.
Dr. Capizzi is a double board certified plastic surgeon who has worked in tandem with a team of prominent national physicians to improve and evolve the established CoolSculpting technique to perfection. As a result, his patients enjoy accelerated outcomes that are twice as effective as those encountered at other practices in and around North Carolina. Clients enjoy not only a slimmer physique and improved energy, but clothes and swimsuits seem to fit better within weeks, boosting both confidence and comfort levels.
Before & After
Take a gander at Dr. Capizzi’s before and after photos, giving you a visual representation of his stunning results.
Getting started with CoolSculpting:
As a distinguished body contouring specialist, Dr. Capizzi will counsel and guide you during a confidential initial consultation to ensure CoolSculpting is right for your lifestyle. He will review your medical history, previous surgeries, discuss your expectations and examine your photos.
While CoolSculpting is not appropriate for those who suffer from obesity—nor should it be considered a “weight loss” program—it is unrivaled as a minimally intrusive technique for vanquishing pesky body fat among individuals within a normal weight range. Those suffering from body distortions commonly (and comically) referred to as “love handles,” “beer bellies,” “spare tires” and “muffin tops” are excellent candidates for a CoolSculpting makeover. In the hands of Dr. Capizzi and his trusted team of cosmetic specialists, the procedure has the potential to radically reform the entire figure in relaxing one-hour sessions with no downtime.
About the procedure:
As you relax in Dr. Capizzi’s comfortable, private office suite, either reading, working or even watching a movie, protective gel pads will be placed to preserve the skin surface, after which cooling cryolipolysis devices are strategically positioned atop your target areas. You will experience a firm, penetrating sensation that alerts you the process is working. Remember that numbness and tingling are normal reactions to the cold, and as such are nothing to be concerned about. As the fat cells meet their demise, they are reabsorbed into the body and naturally eliminated as waste.
Known as a CoolSculpting guru in his field, Dr. Capizzi works with a large assortment of cryolipolysis applicators that are customized to demolish fat deposits in the most awkward, hard-to-reach areas of the body. Moreover, as part of a more in-depth treatment plan, the doctor may sometimes introduce Botox or other injectables in combination with CoolSculpting.
Dr. Capizzi’s CoolSculpting patients report noticeable fat reduction within about 3 weeks of their first visit, with the most dramatic results visible at around 2 months. The doctor’s CoolSculpting technique will continue to impress you, however, as you will enjoy sustained fat loss for 4-6 months.
As each session is only one hour, many patients return to Dr. Capizzi for additional follow-up treatments in order to achieve their ideal aesthetic results. The doctor will determine if multiple sessions are needed during your consultation based on your individual body type and goals.
In order to assist patients in better understanding the benefits of CoolSculpting, Dr. Capizzi has put together a list of the most common questions and concerns encountered at his practice. If you have a specific inquiry that is not addressed below, please don’t hesitate to contact our office to set up a consultation.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting, by using a process called cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical, clinically proven procedure that freezes, breaks down and eliminates figure-distorting fat cells without damaging surrounding muscle, tissue or skin. CoolSculpting is generally accomplished in one-hour sessions, with results most pronounced after two months. No incisions are made during CoolSculpting, and no anesthesia is used, so patients may watch TV, read, work or nap during the procedure. Afterwards, clients are able to immediately return to normal activities.
Who invented CoolSculpting?
By researching children eating popsicles, Harvard physicians Dr. Manstein and Dr. Anderson observed that subcutaneous fat cells were selectively affected and decimated by the cold. The team published their findings in 2008 in the journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, noting that extended contact with a freezing agent could reduce body fat without damage to the skin, nerves or muscles. Thus cryolipolysis was born, which is the underlying scientific principle ingeniously exploited by CoolSculpting.
Who are the best candidates for CoolSculpting?
Although CoolSculpting does reduce fat, slim, tone and contour the body, it is not a weight loss technique and should not be substituted for improvements in diet and exercise. CoolSculpting does not address cellulite, and is not an alternative to liposuction or a tummy tuck, which may present more appropriate solutions for those patients who suffer from excess skin following a dramatic weight loss.
In healthy, non-obese individuals, Coolsculpting can assist in combatting especially difficult to reach fat deposits, such as those that deform the thighs, belly or hips. Such culturally referenced conditions as love handles, beer bellies, spare tires or muffin tops are perfect for elimination through CoolSculpting! Additionally, clients undergoing breast surgery or top surgery may also enjoy the benefits of this expedient and exponentially effective cosmetic procedure.
What happens during the CoolSculpting procedure?
Dr. Capizzi and his team of body contouring specialists will first place a protective gel pad atop the skin surface. Next, a customized cryolipolysis applicator is chosen that will target the specific areas outlined in your initial consultation, usually the thighs, abdomen, arms, buttocks, back or hips. The non-invasive applicator gently begins to freeze the fat cells with a cooling agent, while preserving the nerves, skin, muscles and skin tissue. During this stage, you may feel the normal sensations associated with exposure to the cold, such as tingling, numbness or slight pressure.
The applicators are closely monitored by Dr. Capizzi and his staff during the procedure to ensure precision and maximum effectiveness, and sensors within the devices themselves also regulate temperature for consistency and evenness. After undergoing apoptosis, or controlled elimination, the fat cells are now reabsorbed into the body as waste and are expelled through natural processes, resulting in a slimmer shape with greater muscle definition.
Having been through the Capizzi experience, these patients can help you understand the smoothness of the journey.
What happens to the frozen fat?
The body metabolizes the frozen fat cells as organic waste, and this process occurs over the course of approximately 4 months, resulting in continued loss of unsightly fat from the torso. As the cooled fat cells undergo apoptosis, the body releases cytokines and other inflammatory mediators that gradually digest them. Lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system to be processed, much like fat from food. Because the lipid clearance process is gradual, there is no harmful change in blood lipids or liver function.
Is CoolSculpting painful?
During the CoolSculpting procedure, you may feel some tingling, numbness or cold sensations, but these are normal and not any more uncomfortable than what you might experience on a brisk winter’s day. Most patients nap, read or watch movies during their one-hour treatments and return immediately afterwards to normal activities.
Does CoolSculpting affect the muscles?
CoolSculpting is based on the scientific principle that fats crystallize at a faster rate than other types of cells. Therefore the muscles, as well as tissue, skin and nerves remain unaffected during the procedure. Cooling is carefully monitored by the doctor and his staff, as well as by sensors inside the CoolSculpting panels, so that only fat cells are frozen, while the rest of the body remains intact.
Does CoolSculpting impact cholesterol?
Rigorously tested and approved by the FDA, CoolSculpting has shown no evidence of an adverse influence on triglycerides or blood lipids. This is because the process of fat elimination is gradual, taking place over 4 months, and mimics the body’s natural waste removal cycle.
Are there any side effects to CoolSulpting?
The only discomfort reported by CoolSculpting patients is the occasional redness, numbness or tingling associated with exposure to the cold. Occasionally these symptoms will persist for over one week, but they are temporary. Dr. Capizzi and his caring staff members are on hand to guide you through the entire process and will be able to address these issues with a follow up plan. Unlike liposuction or a tummy tuck, there are no incisions to heal from with CoolSculpting, so clients can resume work and other activities on the same day as their procedure.
How long do CoolSculpting results last?
CoolSculpting permanently destroys fat cells and fat deposits, which the body then eliminates as waste. The best way to maintain the phenomenal results from your procedure is to make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, replete with a wholesome diet and lots of exercise. Remember, CoolSculpting cannot remove future fat that hasn’t formed yet! Nevertheless, CoolSculpting results can remain visible for up to 5 years post procedure.
