LIP LIFT

Want fuller lips? If you’ve exhausted your plumping products, tried the Botox lip flip, or taken the plunge for lip filler, and you’re still not getting the results you want…you may feel like you’re out of luck. Products and fillers can only get you so far, but they’re not the only options. In fact, there’s another popular procedure right under everyone’s noses: the lip lift!

What does it address?

A lip lift is a quick surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and the top of the lip (also known as the “philtrum”). The lip lift is a good option for patients looking to add more height to their lips, or to shorten the distance between the nose and lips, to give a fuller overall appearance. Shortening the distance between the nose and the top lip allows the redness of the lip to roll outward, making the lips look fuller and more pronounced. It also increases how much of your upper central teeth show when your lips are resting.

The length of the philtrum can expand over time. This is due to less collagen production, which is part of the natural aging process. As the philtrum lengthens, the top lip begins to turn inward, resulting in a thinner appearance. Standard lip lifts have long been done on older patients, often during a facelift procedure. In recent years, however, surgeons have modified the procedure to address the desires of younger patients – complete with less visible scars and quicker recovery. For those who want bigger lips but are apprehensive to get lip filler, the lip lift is a perfect option.

The Procedure

The lip lift procedure adds height to the structure of your upper lip, giving it a more nuanced shape. This is usually done under local anesthesia and takes under an hour. Once you are numb, your surgeon will shorten the space underneath your nose by removing a bullhorn-shaped strip of skin, just under your nostrils. This raises the edges of the lips, causing them to look more enhanced, and sharpens the Cupid’s bow. Patients looking for better shape AND more volume in their lips can opt to add filler injections to their procedure.

Recovery

As with other procedures performed under local anesthesia, recovery is fairly smooth. Typically, no prescription pain medication is needed – just ice and over-the-counter painkillers like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Some patients report feeling a slight pulling sensation in the area lasting anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks into recovery. After a week, though, the stitches are removed, and any residual redness can be covered with a concealer.

Combining Lip Lift and Lip Filler

Are you looking to enhance your results and accentuate your perfect pout even more? Add a syringe of lip filler to your lip lift procedure! Juvéderm® by Allergan is a collection of FDA-approved, gel-like fillers that are used anywhere on the face to eliminate unwanted wrinkles, crow’s feet, nasolabial lines, and marionette creases. Their key ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the human body, but gets depleted as we age. The hyaluronic acid hydrates and replenishes the skin, giving way to a more youthful, beautiful you. Results usually last up to 12 months. At Capizzi MD, we offer several of the Juvéderm® collections to our clients to achieve their goals.
