FAQ
How does it work?
IPL Photofacials use a dedicated laser to emit pulses of broad-spectrum light through direct contact with the skin. At Capizzi MD, we used the Sciton BBL laser to provide this treatment. These treatments should only be administered by a Licensed Medical Aesthetician in order to get the very best results, and to minimize any potential risks.
The pulses of broad-spectrum light are absorbed by the hemoglobin and melanin in the skin, which intentionally damages these areas. When affected in this way, the melanin creating the pigmentation abnormalities breaks up and is absorbed which decreases its appearance on the surface of the skin. The damaged hemoglobin stimulates blood flow to the area, aiding in healing and rejuvenation.
What areas can be treated?
- Face
- Neck
- Back
- Shoulders
How many treatments should I get?
Oftentimes we see the best results for any skin concerns with a series of treatments. Our provider will recommend the precise amount of treatments (usually a series of 3), spaced 6-8 weeks apart. Results will show gradual improvement, with results lasting 6-12 months. We recommend maintenance treatments every 6-12 months to help prolong results.
How do I prepare for an IPL Photofacial?
Do not tan or apply self-tanner for at least 7-10 days prior to treatment. It targets pigment in the skin so the less tan you are the better! Also, discontinue any retinol use 3-5 days prior and inform your provider of any medications you may take that may increase your photosensitivity.
What will my experience be like?
First, our provider will begin with a gentle cleansing to ensure any makeup or product is removed from your face. Then, a cool gel will be applied to assist the device in moving around on your skin. Once your skin has been prepped, your provider will begin administering the treatment by running the device along your skin as it pulses light.
Depending on the number of areas being treated, expect your appointment to be 1-2 hours.
What is recovery like?
After your treatment, expect a little rosy glow for a few hours. No real downtime is necessary and you can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment, including makeup application. In the days following your treatment, you may notice that freckles or pigmented areas appear darker. This is totally normal and these areas will begin to flake off shortly.
To improve your results, we recommend Alastin products to assist with recovery. Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar will provide your skin with important nutrients and moisture to rejuvenate your skin. Alastin Hydratint SPF 36 Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen will help to protect your skin from further damage, especially in the days immediately following your treatment. Inquire with your provider if you are interested in learning more about recovery products.
